We lost our Grandfather today. From Mason's teacher:
I want to start by sending my condolences, Mason shared with me that his great grandfather passed away yesterday. I am so sad and sorry to hear about your loss, please know I am keeping you and all your family in my prayers.
You may be aware of all of this, but just in case I wanted to let you know that Mason seems to be carrying and feeling this loss quite heavily. He first mentioned it to me when I went into his classroom, but moved on from the conversation pretty quickly. When we got to my office he worked well for about 20 minutes and then just couldn't seem to get going on anything more. That is when he brought up his Grandpa Ard again. He became very sad and started by saying that now he will never get to go to his house again. He then said "last time I went to his house I played on the switch the whole time, how idiotic is that!" and got frustrated with himself for a moment. I told him that I had no doubt that Grandpa Ard was simply grateful to have him around, regardless of what he was doing, and that I am confident that at some point he made his grandfather smile that day. He also shared that his grandpa gave him a red, white & blue popsicle that day and that he remembers the chimes in the backyard of his grandfather's house, which he thought were cool. He then got very emotional and said that he is going to miss Grandpa Ard a lot but he is happy because he knows that he now has both his legs again.
I can imagine this is a sensitive time and I pray this email does not add to the hurt in your heart in any way. He is quite open with you so he may have shared this with you already, but in the case that he has not I thought it was better to fill you in. I knew you would want to know what he is feeling.
